My often triggered quotes

Here are the top 9 quotes that I use regularly as a personal communication tool. Quotes are a way to deliver a message and I am always intrigued how some of these old quotes still apply to our day to day life so I try to look for new ones and use them when appropriate.  I know that many people do not like to see or hear quotes so I try to be careful of where and when to use them.

How do quotes relate to PracticeToLead?
Quotes come to mind after a trigger, you see or hear something and that triggers a quote in your mind.  Find the quotes that helps you practice certain behavior or response to events and that quotes could be a good behavior practice point. I connected the quotes to my personal triggers and area of development

Do you have a set of quotes that always come to mind? Do you pay attention to the triggers for these quotes? Ever feel like changing them?

Practice makes perfect - <can’t find who said it first>
I am not big on perfect. I am not sure you could ever achieve perfection and even if you do I question the ROI put into that last mile to get there.
BUT practicing is key to improving and it is why I am creating my app.  I use it frequently as a reminder to try and motivate myself.  It is something that I try to teach my kids day in and day out.
Try “Practice makes better” - Thanks Rashid Shaikh for the suggestion!

I don’t lose, I win or I learn - Nelson Mandela
I love this quote and it came really handy when I coached my daughter’s soccer team.   We applied our learning in practice after every loss - or should I say learning experience - and we were able to turn the season into success. .500 record and 3 game winning streak to close is out!
Recently I have been trying to change that quotes to be something like “I don’t lose, I win and I learn” because there is a lot to learn from winning.  Imagine you’ve just had a difficult conversation with a coworker.  The conversation was successful and leads to a healthy relationship, even a great partnership at work. Wouldn’t you want to reuse the learnings from that conversation?

In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable - Dwight D. Eisenhower
Really good to have around software companies so you could point to it every time you have to change direction, priority, deadline,.... Happens all the time in our business, even more so now with the wide adoption of agile.
This best applies to vacations as I don’t think I’ve ever been on one that didn’t include a “surprise” or two!

First house you build and sell, the second house you build and rent, the third house you build and keep - My grandfather always said it but not sure where it originated
I found it to apply to the software industry really well. It takes couple version before architecting a piece of software right, it even takes couple refactoring for areas of the product.  Ever hear someone tell an engineer “but we just refactored that entire code last year” as if that was going to be the final solution.

“If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it again?” -  John Wooden
Following this quote religiously is dangerous in the software world because perfection could also be very costly, I’ve seen many startups go under because of that.  Ignoring it completely also leads to a mountain of debt and I’ve seen it lead to the death of many products, projects and even some startups.  That is why I like the next quote about risk!

A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for. John A. Shedd
Take calculated risks!  Playing it safe is a disadvantage in the modern world.  Just remember that you can’t lose, you could only learn.

I keep reminding myself that I need to do things differently in order to scale and grow my career.

A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes. - Mark Twain
It is a great way to validate what you are hearing.  If you hear some news that is moving faster than you could keep track off, be suspicious of its authenticity.
I keep this mind as I hear about rumors around the office, it basically motivate me to move fast and crush these rumors.  I know rumors aren’t really lies but they are almost never fully truly as everyone adds their own spice.

Be yourself, everyone else is already taken - Oscar Wilde
It is a great one to remember if you are giving someone feedback and trying to compare them to others, as in don’t do that.  It is also good to remember if you are trying hard to be someone else, learning from other and improving ourselves is the better approach

“If anyone could do it then I can too” - Issam Gharios
I can't recall the first time I said it but I do remember it got me my first job, at least that is what my manager told me later. It came to mind frequently when I was reading growth mindset books. It might be too much for some but to me it is the right motivation to push through and achieve a goal
